Ethical Readings
I was driving down the road to my friends house in Florida when I noticed an adorable little building that said “Psychic Boutique $20 Readings” and I thought “why not?”
When I stopped in I was greeted by a lady who immediately went into upsell mode. It wasn’t a $20 reading, in fact she said a tarot reading was $65 and she did a full reading with a few sets of cards that was $250. When I said I wasn’t planning on dropping that kind of cash that day she said “well what can you pay?” I replied that I could go up to $150. She said she could do that and as she was saying it the bad vibes started. She started to put tarot cards down and as she began to give me my reading absolutely nothing rang true. Her interpretations of the cards were so far off that I wasn’t even sure what realm they were coming from.
She told me I have “darkness” around me and my chakras are out of balance and she could remove the darkness and balance my chakras. She also said my son and his girlfriend were in trouble and were breaking up and some other stuff about my mom who she didn’t register as passed over.
When I told her that none of that resonated with me she began to backtrack and tried to sell me something else. She touched on all the “hot topics” like love and money and moving but none of it was anywhere even close to what is happening in my life and the things she did say were so generic they were just that, generic.
When people come for a reading they expect answers they don’t necessarily know the answers to, or they want confirmation of answers they already know. It is up to us as Readers to help them with those answers.
While there is no regulation on readings, and they are subjective to the reader, there is some semblance of order to a reading. Or perhaps in all the readings I’ve had I am going on there is an order to them.
If you are using a standard Raider Waite Tarot deck there is a standard to the meanings on the cards however each reader has their own interpretation that goes along with the card but usually stays in close with the original meaning.
If you are using Oracle cards then there is a bit more leeway with what’s on the card and what is in the pictures.
To be an ethical reader stay away from the basic generic responses. If you aren’t getting information that is specific and useful, don’t try and make it up. You will give off the energy of lies. If your interpretation of the standard cards is no where in the realm of standard meanings, let the person know ahead of time.
Readings can be a fun light hearted moment or they can be full of tears and cathartic emotions processing. Both are great! As Readers it is our responsibility to give the sitter the best most honest information we have. I often tell people I am just the Messenger, and it’s not my message. When it’s done with integrity it can be a beautiful thing.
